Philip, the New York “Times” correspondent, reports that the advancing season, and the heavy rain of the past 10 days make it almost incredible that the Germany can launch a heavy offensive before the spring. “Besides, he &dds. “it is reasoned here, that there must be a growing pressure in Germany against a suicidal war in the West while Russia seizes all the strategic positions and booty in the East. It is known that there have been serious differences between Herr Hitler's advisers and the High Command over happenings in the Baltic States. Sympathy in many places in Germany seems to side with Finland. Germany has lost control of the whole eastern Baltic as well as any immediate hope of access to the Black Sea. those places which the Fuehrer promised his countrymen. She is hemmed in in the East more firmly that at any time since Imperial Germany was defeated.” MORE ACTIVITY ON MANY PARTS OF FRONT. BETWEEN RHINE AND MOSELLE. A French communique says: “Activity among first line units spread during the night on many parts of the front between the Rhine and the Moselle.” FIERCE ENEMY EFFORT ENTIRELY UNSUCCESSFUL DELUGE IN SAAR REGION. (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) PARIS. October 12. An official commentator on the West front says: “the activity of one of the German raid was particularly fierce. It was preceded by a heavy artillery barrage, but the results were entirely in our favour and not a single prisoner was taken by the enemy. Rain fell in an unceasing deluge over the Saar region for some hours.” The Paris agency of the Associated Press of America says the Germans have suffered many casualties in recent attacks. The French, who are well entrenched, have not lost an inch of ground, while their losses have been slight. _________
