TRUST AFFAIRS

USE OF MEMORIAL PARK IN SUMMER. CONFERENCE WITH SPORTS BODIES TO BE HELD. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust was held last night. Mr H. P. Hugo being in the chair. Also present were Messrs H. H. Daniell. J. H. Handyside. R. Page, C. E. Grey, and A. Owen Jones. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs E. G. Eton, J. Macfarlane Laing and R. Krahagen. A letter was received from the Masterton Borough Council advising that the council had agreed to remit the rates on the Opera House, subject to the approval of the audit office. School grants for the year were passed as follow: Central, £4O; Lansdowne, £2O; West. £25; St Patrick’s. £l5; Solway, Whatman, and Fernridge, each £7 10s. A grant of £2O was made to an apprentice who had advised the Trust that he had ' accepted an engineering apprenticeship with William Cable Co, Ltd. Wellington, and sought assistance. Mr H. H. Daniell stated that the application was the first of its kind yet made and that in the past the academic student had received all grants and the technical student nothing. The Trustees unanimously favoured making the grant. Accounts for £25 17s 9d were passed. A general discussion arose concerning the use of the Memorial Park during the summer months. In the past the ground had been sub-let for grazing. Trustees were of the opinion that an endeavour should be made by sports bodies to make use of the splendid facilities offering, particularly in view of what they considered the congested state of the Park Oval during the cricket season. A meeting of delegates from the associations concerned is to be convened by the chairman of the Trust so that a round-table conference with Trustees could be held. Mr H. H. Daniell pointed out that there was a possibility of the Territorials using the grounds for training purposes at night.
