MAJOR STOPPAGE

IN AUSTRALIAN COAL INDUSTRY THREATENED BY ENGINEERS AND FIREMEN. DEFENCE INDUSTRIES AFFECTED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 12.20 p.m.) NEWCASTLE, This Day. A major stoppage in the Australian coal industry is threatened. A dispute has arisen because of dissatisfaction among the colliery members of the Federated Engine Drivers’ and Firemen’s Association with the terms of new awards. A stoppage would seriously affect a number of other industries in the Commonwealth, including some which are vital for defence. Aggregate meetings held on the Northern coalfields decided that unless the Government or owners acted to rectify what the association considers are injustices under the Federal Arbitration Court’s recent decision on working hours in the coal industry, the engine drivers and firemen vJ|l be withdrawn from collieries throiffnout Australia next Tuesday.
