RACES AT OPAKI

MASTERTON CLUB

SPRING MEETING OPENED. GOOD QUALITY HORSES ENGAGED. The Maslerton Racing Club opened its spring meeting at the Opaki racecourse today. Tiie weather was fine and there was a splendid attendance for a first day. The club had all the arangements.complete for the meeting thanks to the excellent work carried out by the club’s very able secretary (Mr N. H. James) and a capable band of stewards. The course is in good order and was a credit to the caretaker. The running track made for good times, and everything points to the initial day being one of the most successful ever recorded in the history of the club. The appointments generally are of such a nature as to be appreciated by the public and praise was heard on all sides relative to the facilities for successfully conducting the meeting. A good stamp of horse has entered for the various events and in number and quality the competitors, are ahead of those seen at many much bigger race meetings. The racing so far has proved most interesting and excellent finishes have been witnessed. The results up to the time the ‘■Times-Age” went to Press were as follow: — NURSERY HANDICAP, of £65. From a good start for inexperienced horses Miss Hallomet and Miss Wheriko went to the front and headed the field into the straight. With a furlong to go Beau Coureur came up fast on the outside and Enrich came in between the two leaders, Miss Hallomet and Miss Wheriko. (Winner trained by A. C. Plummer, Dannevirke). Also started: 2 Mother-in-law. 8.6 (Atkins), 3 Girl Pat, 8.6 (Chaplin), 5 Trench Law 8.5 (Burgess), 8 Titter, 7.11 (Wilson), 9 Pirinoa 7.7 (Spratt). A good start saw Cherry Picker take the lead from Mother-in-law, Girl Pat and The Riagg. After two furlongs had been covered. Pirinoa assumed the lead from Cherry Picker, with Girl Pat next, and the rest of the field bunched. At the first turn Pirinoa showed the way to The Ring and Girl Pat. Entering the straight the leaders were Pirinoa, The Ring and Titter. Halfway down the straight Cherry Picker and Gothic challenged with The Ring close up. In a splendid finish Cherry Picker maintained his lead winning by a head from Gothic, who was half a head in front of The Ring. Trench Law was fourth. Time, 1.42. HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, of £lOO. 'From the barrier the first to show up was Debham. who held the lead from All Blood, Cricket and Lustral. In the back straight the order remained the same but as the first turn was reached Cricket challenged Debham, with Cuisinier close in behind. Three furlongs from home Cricket still showed the way to Debham, with the rest of the field bunched close in. Coming into the straight Cuisinier challenged but was; unable to catch the flying Cricket who passed the post going away. The rest of the field was strung out. MASTERTON HANDICAP, of £l3O. Won by two lengths, It lengths between second and third. Winsome Lu was fourth. Time, 1.40.

After two furlongs had been covered Lucullus Lad led from Mishna and Might. The order remained the same until half a mile from home, when Might took over. With three furlongs to go Corroboree moved up with Might, with Winsome Lu and Mishna handily placed. As they turned for home Corroboree had charge from Might, with Gay Chou in third position. With a furlong to go, Mishna had taken charge and staved MT Gay Chou, tn win by two lengths, with Arctic King finishing fast to fill third position.
