JAPANESE RETIRE

IN SOME CHINESE PROVINCES SUPPOSED PREPARATION FOR PEACE MOVE. WANG-CHIN-WEI’S INTRIGUE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. SHANGHAI, October 10. It is announced that the Japanese forces are withdrawing from the entire Chungshan district in South China, following the similar movement from the Changsha area in the Hunan Province. It is believed to be due to a desire by Mr Wang Ching-wei that the Japanese should shorten their battle lines as a preliminary to new peace moves and the possible launching of a new so-called central Government for the Japanese-controlled areas in China. It is persistently rumoured that Mr Wang has made contact with nationalist agents on the possibility of an armistice as a preliminary to peace. This envisages the retirement of General Chiang Kai-shek or the desertion of a number of his strongest supporters. Japanese planes bombed many centres today in nationalist territory during the celebration of the “Independence Day” holiday.
