DAIRY PRODUCTION
DECREASE THROUGHOUT NEW ZEALAND. POSITION IN THE WAIRARAPA. Production per cow at the present time is definitely down all over New Zealand and especially in the Wairarapa, according to those connected with the dairy industry. It is pointed out that this state of affairs is attribuable to the exceptionally dry weather experienced at the beginning of the year. Although production is down considerably compared with the corresponding period of last year, some improvement is now apparent, and cream supplies are rapidly improving. Actually. the weather being experienced at present is quite good for dairy herds but rain is needed within the next week or two to refresh the pastures, as the past month has been a fairly dry one. The succession of snowstorms in July did not tend to improve the condition of dairy stock. One dairy farmer said he had never seen cows in such poor fettle at this time of the year. This was due to the drought early in the year, and to the greater use of hay during the autumn and winter. Losses of cows during the colder months were also more severe than is usually the case.
