TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Prospects for Mitchelson Cup AVONDALE FORM POINTS TO THE CARDINAL BALINAVAR AND SLY FOX ARE SMART PAIR WHO SHOULD GO WELL (BY “CARBINE.”) At Ellerslie on Saturday the first race of the season in New Zealand carrying four figures in stakes will be run. The Mitchelson Cup is an event which many punters steer clear of, for the records of the race are packed with surprises. One has to go back some eight years before finding that the public had sought out the winner when they sent out Historic-favourite and in a stirring finish he and an outsider, Prince Vai, passed the post so close that a dead-heat was declared. Indications at the time of writing'point in the direction of a surprise victory.

Twelve months ago at Ellerslie Balinivar and Sly Fox disputed the finish of a hack event, the first division of the Gordon Handicap. This year the latter will carry No 1 saddlecloth in the Cup and Balinivar also is one of the favourites. In their rise to the best company both have shown form above the average, Sly Fox especially having impressed by winning his last two starts at Wanganui and Avondale. At 9.2 he has now reached a more difficult mark in the handicaps, but he must still be strongly fancied. Aalinivar created a very good impression when he made his reappearance at Paeroa to beat all .but Brazen Bold. That outing is sure to have benefitted him greatly and although this will be his first trial over a mile and a half he should not find it beyond him. While the consistency of King Rey in being placed at his last four starts must be respected, at 9.2 he seems well cared for and on Avondale Cup running The Cardinal is preferred. In fact, The Cardinal would appear the logical favourite. His rapid rise from hack company, to win the Avondale Cup at his first appearance in the open ranks stamped him as above the ordinary. A rise in weight still finds him on a very handy mark at 7.11- and the extra two furlongs next Saturday will be all in his favour. AVONDALE FORM Although larger, this field is not much better than the one The Cardinal defeated in the Avondale Cup, so it is really difficult to go past him. Golden Sheila would be in need of the race and Hot Box on the same mark is preferred. The latter won the Poland Cup handsomely at Paeroa and stays well. He now appears more 'solid

than previously and should strip a fit horse next week. Unless the going is very heavy Ned Cuttie does not appeal, for his form on top of the ground is very moderate. Nor does Gold Vaals take the eye as a likely winner after his failures at Avondale and Paeroa. However, his win at Tauranga will help him to return to favour. Scotland is a smart galloper at his best and considering his good winning record, is well treated with 7.12. Few of the lightweights have much to recommend them. Master Brierly is down on a very handy mark but on his recent poor form must be regarded as a spent light. Airam was twice placed at Avondale after which she failed at Paeroa and further improvement can hardly be expected. If a lightweight is to win it may be Birthday Boy or Philcourt, although neither impresses as likely to beat The Cardinal on the scale of weights. Birthday Boy was a useful second to King Musk at Paeroa on Monday but this class is a lot stronger while the distance may also trouble him. Philcourt is a likely young galloper who beat all but Hot Box in the Poland Cup at Paeroa. However, even allowing for improvement he does not yet seem quite up to winning in this company. FIXTURES.
