FATHER AND SON BANQUET. ADDRESS BY MR A. E. BATE. The annual Father and Son banquet held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall last night was largely attended. Ninety persons sat down to a sumptuous tea, which was done full justice to. Mr W. A. Clarke, president of the Masterton Y.M.C.A., presided. The address was given by Mr A. E. Bate (former secretary of the local Y.M.C.A. for 13 years), who. in an inspiring manner, gave sound advice to the boys as well as to their fathers. Mr Bate referred to the life work of Edward Wilson, which he advised the boys to use as a pattern. Mr Bate received an attentive hearing and was heartily applauded for his address. The Rev F. J. Parker and Mr G. Masters also spoke briefly, the keynote of their remarks being the need for a greater understanding of the boys by their fathers. Mr Masters added that if a father were to fail there was still a Greater Father. Community singing, led by Mr J. J. Hunter, and el splendid musical programme made the gathering a signal success. The programme was' as follows:— Toast. "The King"; toast, “The Y.M.C.A. Master Eddie Jaspers; reply, the chairman. Guitar solo, Master Jack Hodgetts. Toast. "-Our Dads,,” Master Fred Parsons; reply. Rev F. J. Parker. Recitation, Master Win. Pringle. Toast. "Our Sons—The Nation’s Future Men." Mr G. Masters; reply, Master Doug. Ranston. Vocal solo’."-Mr G. Dickel. Address, Mr A. E. Bate. Mouth organ solo. Master Norman Wilson. Thanks, the Associate Chairman (Mr L. Cretney). National Anthem. Mr Miller Hope was the pianist.
