CARTERTON

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

INDUCTION OF NEW MINISTER,

(“Times-Age” Special.)

St Andrew's Presbyterian Church was comfortably filled last evening when the induction of the Rev W. J. Couling, of Geraldine, was carried out by the Rev Mr Armstrong, of Pahiatua. The members of the Presbytery present' were the Rev D. McNeur (Lansdowne), John Mann (Martinborough), R. S. Keenan (Featherston), and R. Dickie, and Messrs F. M. Reynolds and Arch Clark.

The service was opened by the Rev Mr Armstrong, who delivered a very stirring address and took for his text St Luke VI, verse 10, “And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so, and his hand was restored whole as the other.” The subject of his very able address was the recall to the heroic in religion. The preacher was- listened to throughout with close attention.

The Rev John- Mann addressed the congregation, and the Rev R. S. Keenan’s address was directed to the Rev Mr Couling.

During the service, which was very impressively conducted throughout, hymns from the Church Praise were sung by the congregation, Mrs Gibb Johnston being at the organ. At the conclusion of the service in the Church the Benediction was pronounced and those present adjourned to the Presbytery Hall where Mr Couling was introduced.

The Rev D. McNeur extended a very hearty welcome to Mr Couling, his wife and family. Mr McNeur said that he could recommend to them the congregations of the Carterton and Gladstone presbytery and assured Mr Couling of their loyalty at all times. He was sure all were of one mind, and that was a hearty welcome with hearts and hancis. It had been said that people with wisdom came from the South and that all good farmers came from the North. He assured them that the Wairarapa Presbytery had chosen a man with high ideals and that Carterton was receiving a great acquisition in Mr Couling. Mr W. Linton, on behalf of Carterton congregation, extended a hearty wel ■ come to their new Minister and thanked Mr McNeur for his work on behalf of the. congregation since the departure of the Rev Mr Byers. Mr W. Wilson (Carrington) also extended a welcome on behalf of his dis-

She said how pleased they were to wel ■ come Mr and Mrs Couling and family. The Rev W. F. Stent, on behalf of St Mark's Anglican Church, extended a cordial welcome. The Rev -H. White (Methodist) and the Salvation Army Captain also expressed their pleasure at being present and added their welcome. Mr Keenan rendered two songs in fine style, Mrs Gib Johnston playing the accompaniments. Mr Couling, who was received with applause, thanked the speakers roost heartily for the welcome given himself wife and family, and he assured his’audience that if the spontaniety of his welcome was any criterion then he certainly had come among real friends. He would do his best, but to do this it was necessary, he receive the co-opera-tion of his congregation, and he felt that they all would be a very happy, family. He had been greatly impressed with the induction service, and was indeed pleased to become their minister. The gathering was closed with the singing of “Abide With Me and tie pronouncing of the Benediction. Supper was later served. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. Johnston- J. Steel, C. L. Reynolds, C. Campbell and D. McGregor. BOWLING CARTERTON TEAMS. Carterton Bowling Club will be represented at the official opening of the Masterton and Park bowling greens tomorrow by the following: To Park: Beaven, Callander. DeLacey. Barber (s): to Masterton: Smith. Robertson Beale, Tucker (s). There is a possibility of other rinks being represented. FOOTBALL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP DANCE. To celebrate its success in winning the Wairarapa senior championship, the Redmond Cup and the Dewar Shield, the Carterton Football Club will hold a championship dance in the King's theatre, Carterton, on Monday night. The music will be supplied by Udy's orchestra. Supper will be provided and popular admission prices will be charged. During the evening the presentation of the trophies won by the club will be made. Officials of the Wairarapa Rugby Union will be present, besides representatives of various Wairarapa clubs. The gathering should prove a suitable wind-up to a very successful season. BABY CARNIVAL CARD PARTY AND DANCE. There was a very good attendance at the card parly and dance held in the Clareville Hall last evening to further the candidature of John Corbett in the W.D.F.U. carnival which is being conducted for the purpose of providing funds for the building of a Ladies' Rest Room in Carterton. The

winners of card prizes were: ladies. Mrs Page 1, Mrs C. Meyrick, 2; men: Messrs F. Daysh 1, Coleman 2. Supper was provided by the ladies' committee. The gathering concluded with a most enjoyable dance. During the evening a competition for a 51b tin of tea was won by Mrs A. T. Hawke, ol Clareville. POSITIONS OF CANDIDATES. The positions of the respective babies in the W.D.F.U. carnival contest up to last evening were as follow:— John Corbet (Belvedere-Taratahi). 13,535. Dermot Fitzgerald (Dalefield). 13.451. Dorothy Rayner (Parkvale'). 12,660. Voting will doubtless be brisk today and tonight, and the final result is being looked forward to with considerable interest. Personal. The many friends of Mr Jack McKenzie, will be pleased to learn that he has returned home again, after treatment in the Wellington Hospital. He has considerably improved in health. Miss Robertson, who has been on holiday in Wellington, returned to Carterton last evening. Mr W. Spooner will leave for the East Coast on Monday on a fortnight's vacation. Most of his time will be spent in fishing. Church Service. Church of England service will bo held al. Gladstone on Sunday at 11 a.m.. and at Parkvale at 2 p.m. The services will be taken by the Rev W. F. Stent. Vicar of St Mark’s.
