LIFE OUT OF TRAVAIL
BRITAIN’S CALM DETERMINATION.
One cannot help but admire a nation which, in the face of ruthless and aggressive neighbours, builds up her bulwarks and also at the same time calmly and determinedly goes about the task of making life more hopeful and healthful for the under-privileged among her own people, writes Bishop Ludlow, of New Jersey, in the London “Evening News.” Here is no decadence. The man or nation which thinks so is playing the fool and will rue the day if action is based upon such a judgment. Here is not decadence, but creativeness based upon belief in man as an agent in the eternal purpose of God and making sacrifices so that that eternal purpose may be accomplished. England is not dying: she is undergoing a painful rebirth. As in all travail, death hovers near. England is aware of that fact, but there is no fear. Only a quiet-eyed confidence that out of her present pain will come new life and better life for the new England.
