BRITISH SHIPS DETAINED AT MURMANSK. ADJUSTMENT ANTICIPATED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, Noon). NEW YORK, October 5. Mr Gedye, in a despatch from Moscow to the “New York Times” says British circles have not denied reports that 12 British and five Swedish steamers. loaded with timber and fertiliser, and being detained by the Soviet at Murmansk, ostensibly following on a German request. The British are, however, optimistic as to an early release, possibly through an arrangement cancelling the British detention of vessels loaded with lathes, cocoa beans and rubber consigned to the Soviet, which has caused a great outcry in the Soviet Press. While it is unlikely that rubber can be shipped, since it is on the list of war emergency goods, it is considered that the British are not trying to cut off Soviet trade .and apparently are willing to ship many much needed commodities which Germany is unable to supply.
