NIGHTMARCH’S DISTINCTION

NEW ZEALAND CUP WON UNDER RECORD BURDEN.

Nightmarch holds the sole distinction of being the only horse'handicapped as top-weight for the New Zealand Cup to win the race. He won under the record burden of 9.6, or 71b more than the next best, Count Cavour, who put up a weight-carrying record four years before Nightmarch scored. Nightmarch beat Concentrate 8.10 by half a length all out in 3min 26 2-ssec. They were both lucky to finish in front of In the Shade, who finished third, two lengths away. K. Voitre, who rode In the Shade, was given instructions never to leave the rails, the fact being overlooked that the back stretch provides a straight run of about half a mile, so that no advantage is gained by sticking to the rails in that part of the course. Voitre was last on the rails at the mile post, last on the rails at the far turn, and last or second last in a field of 13 as they entered the straight. In the Shade was giving a good start to the leaders as they came past the distance, and although he put in a great run and was finishing faster than Nightmarch and Concentrate, he failed to catch them and lost through faulty instructions to the rider. In the previous year In the Shade 7.11 finished second to a certainty in Chide, who won in 3min 23 l-ssec. or over three finished two lengths and a-half in front seconds faster than when Nightmarch
