That purpose is to make an end of the rule of violence and secure that henceforth the word of governments, once pledged, shall be kept. Whenever this war ends, whether soon, or late, Europe will emerge. The vital interests of every people in Europe are at stake at this moment. Reports of Mr Chamberlain’s statement held first place in all French newspapers. The ’‘Oeuvre” says Mr Chamberlain pronounced firm and precise words, which expressed the considered determination of the British people to hold out until threatened liberty shall be saved and peace no longer be at Hitler’s mercy. In the House of Lords, Lord Snell, opening the debate on Earl Stanhope’s review of October 13, which was identical with Mr Chamberlain’s, expressed the hope that the Government would never refuse to listen to a real peace proposal, but there must not merely be a truce, enabling anyone to rearm and prepare for new agggression.
