THE CARE OF YOUR DOG
SOME USEFUL HINTS. Dogs should receive special care during cold weather conditions. Especially is this the case with non-sporting and toy breeds. See that their sleeping quarters are dry and draughtproof, that the bedding is clean, and plenty of it. Good, dry wheaten straw, pine needles, or fine wood shavings are all suitable, and much better, warmer, and cleaner than sacks and old bits of cloth. Then comes the matter of feeding. In cold weather more food is required to keep up the normal theat of the body. Meat in some form should be given in greater proportion than during the summer. About two parts flesh to one part cereals is recommended. Feed I twice a day—morning and evening—at regular hours. It is by no means easy to gauge a dog’s appetite. The best plan is to stand near him while he is eating, and when he starts hesitating remove any that is left over. It is advisable to feed each animal separately. Exercise is very important when the dogs are kept under more or less confined conditions.
When they come in from their scamper on a wet day give them a good rub down before returning to the kennels.
Grooming should never be neglected; it aids the bodily warmth and acts as a general tonic.
