ANNE SHIRLEY CELEBRATES
SEVENTEEN YEARS ON SCREEN. Zdthough Anne Shirley wps twenty years old. she celebrated her seventeenth year on the screen this year, the day she completed her current starring role in R.K.O. Radio’s ‘ I hat Girl From College.” In spile of her long years as a child film star and more recently as an adult, Anne has embarked upon a post-graduate course in screen acting and technique, under the guidance of Director John Farrow. The latter has laid out a list of pictures for Anne to attend, and the star views approximately five films a week. “I don’t look at the picture from the story or entertainment viewpoint, but with an eye to the acting technique,” said Anne. "I watch every detail of one particular role, and learn some things not to do as well as getting scores of pointers on effective ways to handle a part. Different actresses are noted for particular technique, and I try to study each one with the hope of improving my own work. In addition, Mr Farrow has designated five stars from whom he says I can learn special things.' First on the list is Bette Davis, from whom I can learn subtle and convincing characterisation. Barbara Stanwyck has almost perfect timing in her action and dialogue, and I watch her for that. Maureen O’Sullivan was picked for sincerity without effort, Margaret Sullavan for voice control, and Myrna Loy for poise.”
