MAGISTRATE'S COURT

MASTERTON SITTING HELD TODAY. YOUTH COMMITTED TO BORSTAL, The fortnightly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held at Masterton today when Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided. Charged with having obtained credit by means of fraud Colin Charles Carruthers, aged 22 years, was committed for 12 months to the Borstal Institute at Invercargill. Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett, whe conducted the case for the police, stated that Carruthers was a mechanic with no fixed abode. On September 11 Carruthers called on Mrs McKenzie, o. the Occidental Hotel. He informed her that he was employed by a Wellington firm and that they would be responsible for his board. "On the morning of September 18 Carruthers took his personal belongings and cleared out. He was subsequently arrested by Constable C. Reardon," said the Senior Sergeant. "The amount of board owing was £2."

Asked by Mr Lawry if he had anything to say Carruthers stated that he was going to obtain a position with the Wellington firm. He thought that in the meantime he would be able to obtain work and so, pay his board. “At the time I had had no food for four days as I was looking for work,” said Carruthers.

Lavis Gyde, charged with having cast offensive matter in the Arcade. Masterton. was fined £1 and 12s costs. On a similar charge Reginald Thorby was fined £1 and 12s costs . Charged with being the owner of a horse found straying in Colombo Road. Wong Nam was fined £ 1 and £ 1 5s 6d costs.

For having driven a motor car in Queen Street, Masterton, at night without lights, Trevor Jarvis was fined £1 and 10s costs.

Charged with having operated a heavy motor vehicle in High Street,

Masterton. without having first obtained a heavy traffic license, rhe Cunningham Carrying Co was fined £2 and 10s costs.

For having driven a motor car in High Street, Masterton, at a speed exceeding 30 miles per hour. Ledlie Stuart Ferens was fined £3 and 10s costs. On a similar charge John L. McNamara was fined £2 and 10s costs.

Harold E. Trass, charged with having driven a motor car at night without a tail light was fined 5s and 10s costs. The last four cases were conducted by Inspector J. McGregor. Charged with having driven a motor car in Chapel Street, Masterton, without due care and attention, Walter Spackman, who entered a plea of not guilty, was fined £1 and IGs costs.
