REVEALED IN OPENING PHASE OF WAR

Allied Mastery of the Sea FACTORS UNDERMINING HITLER’S POPULARITY EFFECT OF THE PACT WITH RUSSIA (By Telegraph.—Press Association—Copyright.) NEW YORK, September 30. The “New York Times’’ Paris correspondent says that the preliminary stage of the war may be considered to have ended. It has shown that the German army is a swift and terrible weapon, and also that Britain are the undisputed masters of the sea, despite the first outburst of submarine successes. Moreover, the British and French air forces have proved that they can more than hold thir own with the Germans. The question seems to be who will tire first. It undoubtedly will be the German people. Herr Hitler, it is believed, also has other reasons tor not wishing to attack the Maginot Line or seeking other means of invasion than his oft-proclaimed love of peace. There are flaws in Germany’s armour which even the accord with Russia is insufficient to mend, one of them being that the system Hen Hitler has built is most personal and it is realised that the willingness of the Germans to make a sacrifice depends on continued belief in a Hitler Germany. Already this belief has been shaken. Germany is last becoming a Hitler plus Stalin Germany, which is not a good war cry with which to attack' the Maginot Line.
