CHRISTIAN SOLDIERING

SANCTIFICATION OF LAWFUL FORCE.

“It is manifest that the main disease from which the world suffers today is aggressive, selfish, arrogant nationalism,” said the Bishop of Lichfield, Dr. Woods, in his presidential address at the diocesan conference. “The only really effective way to counter nationalism gone sour is to show that nationalism can be Christian. To give such a demonstration of Christian nationalism and Christian internationalism to the world is the high vocation of our nation and of the fellowship of our Commonwealth. What is involved in this hope of a Christianised nation? It must mean, in my own belief, some kind of sanctification of lawful force opposed to illegal violence. I cannot believe that the doctrine of non-resis-tance to evil can be held to be relevant, for instance, to the truly diabolical Japanese bombings of crowded Chinese cities. And if it is right, as I believe sometimes it is right to use force to protect justice and withstand the evil-doer, then that answers a good deal of the problem about conscription and national service.”
