KIATERE CLUB
FINAL RACE ON SATURDAY.
SEASON OFFICIALLY CLOSED
On Saturday the members of the Kiatere Harrier Club held their final run of the season from the Epiphany Hall in Short Street. The race was a 5-mile open handicap over a typical cross-country course which included road several waist-deep streams, bush and paddocks. D. Nelson was first to go off 3.45, followed by L. Francis bff 2.50 and A. Adderson off 2.40. Then came J. Laing (1.40), W. Burns (.50 secs), followed by the back-markers. At the end of the first lap, D. Nelson was leading by 200yds from L. Francis who was closely attended by A. Adderson. W Burns, who was running very well and J. Laing were now closing up on the limit men, whom they passed halfway round the second lap. In a very close finish J. Laing managed to stall off a determined challenge by W. Burns, and won by inches. The juniors also ran over one lap of the senior course in an open handicap race. J. Hodgetts went away first with N. Dickel next, then came C. Summers, followed by F. Sexton, and finally N. Jacobsen and M. Doyle. In another close finish M. Doyle narrowly beat N. Jacobsen in the sprint home. . Detailed placings were as follow: — Seniors —J. Laing 1, W. Burns 2, P. Nelson 3, L. Francis 4, A. Adderson 5, R. Greeks 6. Fastest times —W. Burns 1, R. Greeks 2, W. MacDonald 3, J. Laing 4. Juniors —M. Doyle 1, N. Jacobsen 2, J. Hodgetts 3, C. Summers 4, F. Sexton 5, Fastest times —M. Doyle 1, N. Jacobsen 2, F. Sexton 3.. Subsequently the members and supporters of the club were entertained at afternoon tea. .
In declaring the season officially closed Mr A. L. Askew, the club’s popular president, said that although the season had been a rather difficult one, owing largely to a falling off in membership, mainly through the recent outbreak of war, it had been a successful one as far as the actual running was concerned. He thanked the ladies’ committee for doing the “hard work” at the club’s various functions; the club committee, Mr A. F. Carter, the handicapper; the time-keepers, starters, the runners themselves.
—A. MacDonald, the Bell Trophy, bethat the club had been very successful in interclub races. The club won at the Masterton Jubilee Rally; was second at the Dannevirke Rally, third in the provincial championships, and had also beaten the Olympic Club in Wellington for the James Turnbull Trophy. Mr Askew then presented the various trophies, which had been won by members during the season as follow: —A. HacDonald, the Bell Trophy, being second prize in the Rewenui Cup race; R. Greeks, the Albert Cox Cup for the 5-mile Club championship; W. Burgess, the S. A. Mills Trophy for tne .6.’ mile club championship; L. Frances the Falloon Rose Bowl, for the annual 4-mile open handicap; D. Nelson, the Rewenui Cup; R. Greeks, the MacDonald Trophy, for the most points in interclub races; M. Doyle, the 31 mile junior championship cup; D. Nelson, the S. L. Rutherford Rose Bowl, for the most points in handicap races, C. Summers, the D. Turnbull Gold Medal, and M. Doyle, the Badkin Trophy,, for the most points in races, conduct, attendance and uniforms. In the Badkin Trophy only '6 points separated all the juniors. The president then declared the season officially closed. In the evening a very enjoyable dance was held in the Masonic Hall, jointly run by the Masterton’ and Kiatere Harrier Clubs. MASTERTON club FIVE MILE RACE. WIN FOR ROY SHAW. Perfect weather favoured the official closing run of the Masterton Harriet 1 Club held on Saturday afternoon. The race was conducted under open handicap conditions and covered a two-lap course of five miles. The starter, Mr J. J. Hunter sent away six rqnners. R. Baikie, the limit man, set out a steady pace and established a substantial lead, followed by R. Gully and . C. Orr, R. Wyeth and H. Carle being close behind. Roy Shaw, the backmarker, set out in pursuit at a fast pace and soon caught the field. Baikie was running steadily, but Shaw’s long paces began to tell. R. Wyeth ran well and also passed Baikie. Roy Shaw came in first, followed by Wyeth, and Baikie. The times were: Roy Shaw 29min lOsecs, 1; Ron Wyeth, 29.15, 2; J. Baikie 32min, 3. The junior race was won by K. Cairns. Opportunity was taken by the harriers to thank Mr J. Buckton for his services as time-keeper during the season, and for his splendid record of attendance. An adjournment was made to the Masonic Hall where the ladies committee entertained the club at afternoon tea.
Trophies won during the season were presented, the Cameron Cup (a
beautiful trophy presented annually by Mr and Mrs I. D. Cameron), by Mrs I. D. Cameron, the Shaw Rose Bowl by Mrs Geo Shaw (Patroness), and by the club captain, Mr R. Gully.
The list was as follows: —Cameron Cup, H. Carle, 5 mile district and club chainpionship, Wyeth Cup, W. A. C. Pullar, 10 mile district championship, Wadham Cup, W. A. C. Pullar, Shaw Rose Bowl, W. A. C. Pullar; runner up, G. Gregory; Novice championship, C. J. Carle; Junior championship, Liddall Cup, P. Greenlees; Bell Cup, K. Cairns. The President, Mr I. D. Cameron congratulated the winners, and those who did not quite succeed. Mr Cameron also expressed the hope that next season, if no senior races were held, every effort would be made to stimulate the junior’s interest. . Messrs J. J. Hunter and R. Gully also spoke The gathering concluded with a hearty vote of thanks to the ladies’ committee.
