TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Five-Year-Old Smoke Screen To Be Retired MOLDER OF NEW ZEALAND MILE RECORD MANY CLASS PERFORMANCES REGISTERED DURING PAST THREE SEASONS (BY ‘•CARBINE.”) After his breakdown at Foxton it was that Smoke Screen would be retired. Although as he has been very lightly raced and is only a five-year-old it would seem worth while making a further attempt to get him right. Smoke Screen has been one of the best class performers in the Dominion over the past three seasons and holds the New Zealand record time of Imin 35 2-ssec for a mile, established at Ellerslie last Boxing Day.

After being perhaps the best two-year-old of his yeah he commenced as a three-year-old by beating Royal Chief in the Great Northern Guineas, but was then twice beaten by that horse in the Trentham Stakes and New Zealand Derby. He put up a sterling performance that season in the Thompson Handicap to beat all but Oratory. ’ Another fine handicap effort was his second to Disdain in the A.R.C. Railway Handicap. His record reads:— (At Two Years) £ Won Feilding Juvenile Stakes (sf) 90 Won Woodville Debutant Stakes (sf) , 80 Won Wellington Pacific Handicap (6f) 350 Won G.N. Champagne Slakes •; (6f) 450 Won Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes 250 £1,220 Twice unplaced.

(At Three Years) £ Won Marton Railway Handicap (6f) - 100 Won Great Northern Guineas (Im) 500 Second Trentham Stakes (Im) .... 100 Won C.J.C. Riccarton Handicap (9f) 245 Second N.Z. Derby (1-Jm) 200 Second W.R.C. Thompson Handicap (lm) 200 Won W.R.C. Hutt Handicap (lm) 315 £1,660 Once unplaced. (At Four Year) £ Second Woodville Oete Handicap (6f) 25 Second A.R.C. Railway Handicap (6f) 200 Won A'.R.C. King’s Plate (lm) 350 Won Taranaki Stakes (6f) 280 £855 Twice unplaced. (At Five Years) Once unplaced. Total: 22 starts, 11 wins, five seconds. Stakes £3.705 ABOUT HORSES JACK TAR TO BE SPELLED. Jack Tar, who disappointed at Avondale and proved costly to his admirers, is to be given a spell before undergoing another preparation. Since winning at Trentham in July. Jack Tar has suffered a relapse of form, and his connections are evidently taking a wise course in turning him out for a spell. The owner of fely Fox, Mr A. McIntosh, has scratched his horse for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. Sly Fox has been nominated for the. Mitchelson Cup, to be run at Ellerslie on October 14, and that will probably be his next start. SPORT OF KINGS OVERSEAS PERSONAL AND OTHERWISE, It is impossible to say which has been the most notable bargain .on the turf, whether bought at the sales or out of a seller. In the opinion of many, however (says an English paper), Long Set, acquired for 500 guineas out of a £lOO seller at Lincoln, represents one of the outstanding bargains in racing. His record after beating Soldier, a tubed horse, in this small race was amazing. The following year he won the Doncaster Handicap and the Cambridgeshire. As a five and six-year-old he won the Lincolnshire, the Newbury Spring Cup, the Craven Stakes at Epsom, the Select and March Stakes at Newmarket, the Royal Hunt Cup, the Liverpool Cup and the Doncaster Cup. There is, of course, the other side of the picture, but it is, perhaps, better to draw a veil over the number of horses that have been purchased for colossal sums, only to fail on every occasion they ran.

Seven Fifty, Queensland’s champion stayer, has been sold to Mr C. H. Hicks, of Sydney. The purchase price has not been announced, but it is said to be about £3OOO. He will go to Sydney to be trained by B. Pt. Payton, of Randwick. Seven Fifty cost W. A. Tacker 750 guineas—hence the name — and won him £6525 in prize money. His chief successes were the Q.T.C. Sires' Produce Stakes. Queensland Guineas, Q.T.C. St Leger, National Plate, Q.T.C. Metropolitan Handicap and Tattersall’s Cup. He has not been nominated for the big events in the south in the spring, but will appear in others.

A profit of £6126 for the year ended August 31 is revealed in the balance sheet submitted to members of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club at the annual meeting recently. Stakes distributed by the club in the 12 months amounted to £66,030.

According to a recent verdict by the stewards at Ascot (Sydney), a horse does not cause interference by boring cut from the rails and finishing near the outside of the track unless ho actually comes in -contact with a horse going out. or being headed out. A threat of interference may have the same result as actual contact. A horse boring out may carry out another whose rider loses ground in ;m effort to avoid contact that may lead to a fall or a socalled “accident." The offending horse is guilty of hampering the other’s chance of winning. If a man presented a gun at another’s head., and although the bullet missed if the latter died from fright he would not' be legally dead according to the opinion of the stewards at Ascpt. If a horse bores in and, without contact, prevents another from coming through, it has the same effect as actual contact. The rules do not require actual contact to establish interference if a horse crosses anothei without being two clear lengths ahead.

Nigger Boj r started twice last season for one win, and this season won at his only start. Prudent Prince started 11 times last season for one win and third, and this season had had two starts for one win. Asia had one win and a second out of eight starts last season, but in her three starts as a three-year-old has failed to get into a place. Blissful Lady had seven starts last season for one second, but has not started this season. Winning Rival won twice out of four starts last season, but in her only start this season failed to get into the money. Prudent Prince is the only one of the six candidates to have won over a mile, and recorded Imin 41sec when he won the Penscroft Hack Handicap at the Ashburton meeting this month. COLOURFUL PERSONALITY DEATH REPORTED OF RUFE NAYLOR. Rufe Naylor, who died suddenly in Sydney recently, was a colourful sporting figure whose ventures in racing more than once caused a considerable stir in racing circles. He will be remembered as. having managedthe American trip of that great sprinter Winooka. Then the long drawn out court proceedings between Naylor and the Australian Jockey Club were unprecedented. Later still when finally debarred from attending race meetings he set up as a tipster to become known in this direction throughout all parts of Australia and New Zealand, his picturesque broadcasts over a network of Australian stations keeping him well in the public eye. Naylor was also once a bookmaker ’and he dabbled in all ■ branches of sport. He took the Australian champion professional runner Austin Roberts to the United States and also sponsored Eddie Tolan’s trip to Australia.

As the manager-promoter of Sydney's de luxe Sports 'Arena, Naylor brought out the greatest European' cyclists and more recently still introduced to Australia the sensational Chinese

southpaw boxer Kui Kong Young. In fact there was nothing in the realms of professional sport which Naylor was not prepared to tackle and in every respect his career was an amazing one.
