Mr D. W. Earle has been, elected president of the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Club.

The death occurred at the Pahiatua hospital on Wednesday of Mr Thomas Pickering at the age of 78 years.

Dr. W. S. Robertson has been appointed full-time orthopaedic surgeon to the Wellington Public Hospital. Mr G. A. Pascoe has been appointed State Iron and Steel Commissioner according to a Gazette notice. Mr N. J. McLeod, Te Aroha, formerly of the staff of the Public Trust Office, Masterton, has joined up with the military camp at Ngaruawahia. Guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, include: Messrs P. Cope (Palmerston North), E. J. McLean (Alfredton), K. V. Rollens, W. R. Ferris (Wellington). Sir John Reed, who has acted as a temporary judge of the Supreme Court since he reached the statutory age of retirement in December, 1936, will retire tomorrow after • more than 18 years’ service on the Bench. He was appointed a judge in March, 1921, and was knighted in 1936 when he was senior judge and acting-Chief Justice. “On behalf of the board,” said Mr W. R. Nicol, chairman of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors at last night’s meeting, “I extend a welcome back to our midst to the Principal, Mr G. G. Hancox. “The board members are very pleased to see you with them again. We were very concerned about illness, and are pleased to see you are getting over your operation so well.” Colonel R. Miles, D. 5.0., M.C., Regiment of Royal New Zealand Artillery, has relinquished the appointment of General Staff Officer (staff duties), and has been appointed Quartermaster General. Colonel O. H. Mead, D. 5.0., New Zealand Staff Corps, has relinquished the appointment of Adjutant and Quartermaster General and has been appointed Adjutant General. Both retain their appointments on the Army Board.

Having been unable to find a ship to take his to India, the Rt. Rev. T. E. Riddle, moderator of the Presbyteri'an Church of New Zealand, has returned to Auckland. Mr Riddle left by the Mariposa for Sydney just before England’s declaration that a state of war existed with Germany, and he found on arrival at Melbourne that shipping services to India had been considerably reduced. Mr Riddle represented his Church as fraternal delegate to the triennial assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Australia, and then decided to postpone his plans for returning to India, whence he came to- New Zealand, and came back to Auckland. He will fulfil the various duties of his office till November, when he hopes to be able to arrange a passage to India.

The funeral of the late Mr H. O. Toogood took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon. The cortege was a long one, and settlers from all parts of the Wairarapa were present. Among the large number of wreaths were floral tributes from the Masterton Masonic Lodge, No. 19, the Chairman and Councillors of the Masterton County, the Masterton Club, the manager and staff of Messrs Levin and Co., buyers and staff of the Gear Meat Co., and Messrs Lyttle and Co. Ltd. The service at the residence was conducted by Canon Sykes, and at the graveside by the Rev E. J. Rich, the Masonic service being read by Mr H. J. Jones. The pall-bearers were Messrs Laird Meredith. Clarence Meredith. A. D. Gilles. C. Toogood. W. Toogood and A. Stewart.
