FIGURES FOR AUGUST SUBSTANTIAL DROP IN IMPORTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Features of the overseas trade returns for August, issued yesterday by the Customs Department, are a very substantial decrease in imports and a rise in exports, compared with August 1938, giving for the first time for seval years a favourable trade balance for the month. Exports during August were valued at £4,099,000, an increase of £276,000, compared with August, 1938, but i 359,000 below those for August, 1937. Imports last month were valued at £3,791,000, a decrease of £1,272.000 compared with August, 1938, and of £2,217,000 compared with August, 1937. There was an excess of exports last month of £308,000, compared with an excess of imports of £1,240,000 in August, 1938, and of £1,550,000 in August 1937.
