DRIVE ON CHANGSHA

RAPID PROGRESS CLAIMED BY JAPANESE

PROSPECTS OF WESTWARD ADVANCE.

HELD BY THE CHINESE TO BE LIMITED.

SHANGHAI, September 27.

The Domei News Agency says that the Japanese are within 20 miles of Changsha, whose defences are crumbling. Five Chinese divisions are in full retreat. The Chinese' dead in the past fortnight number 8200. Dispatches from Weilin admitted that General Chien had minimised the seriousness of the Japanese drive but insisted that the Chinese army is fundamentally not menaced by it since in the South China area a great number of skilled Chinese are operating behind the enemy lines. It is felt the Japanese will refrain from a further advance westward on account of the mountain defences.
