Mr J. Milne, of Palmerston North, is on a visit to Masterton and is staying at the Empire Hotel. Sir George Shirtcliffe, accompanied by Lady Shirtcliffe, has returned to New Zealand, after a seven weeks’ holiday visit to New Guinea. Major-General Sir John Davidson, K.C.M.G., has been appointed deputychairman of the board of directors of Dalgety and Co., Ltd., according to advice received by the New Zealand superintendent of the company. Messrs Stubbs, Johnstone and McLune, of the Wellington Education Department, are on a visit to Masterton and are staying at the Empire Hotel.
Guests staying at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, include Messrs G. W. Woodhead, McAlister, E. E. Norris (Wellington), A. A. Scholefield (Tinui), Bushby (Hastings) and A. W. McKenzie (Auckland). Lieut.-Colonel G. T. Hall, C.M.G., C.8.E., V.D., J.P., was presented by the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association at the. monthly luncheon at Wellington yesterday with a certificate “in grateful recognition of outstanding service rendered for the benefit of ex-servicemen generally.” His name was placed on the association’s special honours list.
After 36 years’ service with the Government, principally in the Justice Department, Mr G. N. Morris, stipendiary magistrate in Whangarei, retired on superannuation yesterday and will take Up residence in Auckland. Mr Morris, who has been stationed in Whangarei for the past 10 years, will be succeeded by Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.
The death of Professor James Adamson, former Dean of the Faculty of Law at Victoria University College, occurred at Wellington, yesterday after a prolonged . illness. Professor Adamson was born in Forfar, Scotland, and educated at Dundee High School and the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated M.A. and LL.B. He was appointed to one of the law chairs and made Dean of the Faculty of Law at Victoria College in 1908, retiring recently owing to ill health. He was also a member of the Academic Board of the University of New Zealand. Professor Adamson is survived by his wife, whom he married soon after he came to New Zealand.
At last evening’s meeting of the Masterton Playreaders, a letter was received from Mr (now Sergeant) Gilbert C Gaze tendering his resignation owing to his acceptance for active service, and expressing his regret at being obliged to leave a movement that had given him such great pleasure. On the motion of the president, seconded by Mrs Jordan, it was decided —unanimously and with acclamation—that the resignation be not accepted, but that Mr Gaze be elected an honorary member for the duration of his service. Great regret was expressed at the departure of Mr Gaze, tempered by a sense of pride in the course he had chosen. Cabled advice that their son, Midshipman John Clutha Casey, was killed while undergoing flying training, has been received by Mr and Mrs J. P. Casey, New Plymouth. Mr John Casey was 21 years of age and was an old boy of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School. He left school to join the Royal Air Force, and .after preliminary training at Mangere aerodrome, Auckland, he went to England in August, 1938. and was appointed to the Fleet Air Arm. With the Fleet Air Arm he did his first training on His Majesty's aircraft-car-rier Hermes and later served for a period on the recently-torpedoed air-craft-carrier Courageous. From the Courageous he was transferred for special training.
