ROADSIDE BEAUTIFICATION

A roadside beautification scheme, involving an initial outlay of £3700 for the ’whole of New Zealand and an annual expenditure in upkeep of about £3OOO, was supported by the South Island Motor Union at the annual conference in Christchurch. The scheme favoured is along the lines of that drawn up by the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture. It is proposed that officers be stationed in each of the four centres and that they should co-operate with local authorities in an improvement scheme, concerned chiefly with the planting of trees and shrubs and the forming of ornamental plots along the main highways. The meeting disregarded a suggestion that all money should be spent on defence, as it was felt the scheme would take some time to complete.
