WESTERN DRAMAS
NO BLONDES OR CIGARETTES.
There is one distinct change from the old horse operas. The cowboy of today’s films does not dress in the gaudy outfits that marked the era of Tom Mix. O’Brien, Jones, and the rest of them dress in plain clothes that would be worn by real cowboys, often going right through a picture in plain overalls*. These pictures go to real cowboy towns in America, and the star cannot afford to be laughed at by these people. They are the backbone of their audiences.
And no heroine in a Western epic must be seen smoking. Western fans will not have sophisticated heroines, and only recently have begun to accept light blondes in leading roles. Blondes smacked too much of Hollywood for these simple folk, and they wanted none of it.
Yes, the Western is coming back into its own, and it is doubtful if any fan will fail to thrill at a good cowboy and Indian drama.
