ROMANTIC ROLES
LAUGHTON CANDID. One of the first things Charles Laughton requested on his arrival ai Hollywood was an introduction tc Bette Davis. He told Bette that he had seen all her pictures, and considered her the greatest dramatic actress on the screen today. Bette, who was on the set of “Elizabeth and Essex,” or “The Lady and the Knight,” as the studio is now calling the picture, said: “Thank you, pop.” Laughton looked puzzled I for a moment until Bette reminded him that he had starred in “Henry VIII,’ and now she was portraying his famous daughter, The English star enjoyed Bette’s quick wit thoroughly, and they chatted for nearly half an hour. Reporters asked Laughton why he didn’t play romantic roles instead of character parts. “What, with a face like mine that looks like the rear end of an elephant!” scoffed the tubby star.
The United States Government will take the first 18,000 dollars Laughton earns for "The Hunchback of Notre Dame” for back taxes owed by him.
