VOLUME FOR BLIND
CENTENNIAL PUBLICATION. It is reported in “New Zealand Centennial News” that the Wellington Braille Chib, which already undertakes the unselfish and laborious task of preparing scripts in Braille for the blind, is to produce a special volume in Braille script in honour of the Centennial. Contributions are being requested from New Zealand authors.
The club produces its scripts by hand. The letters are pricked out carefully one by one, a process rather slower than making the elaborate letterings beloved of mediaeval monks. Then the Braille scrips are proofed, and a Braille proof cannot be read in the quick time in which ordinary printing can be run through. The sheets arc? then varnished, sewn together, and bound. It is difficult for the outsider to realise the teasing work that goes to make a single page of Braille “written” by hand. When the Centennial volume is complete it is proposed to exhibit it in the Red Cross Society’s stall at the Exhibition. It will find a permanent restingplace in the Alexander Turnbull Library.
