RIVERSIDE GOLF CONTESTS COMMENT ON RECENT PLAY. I I STABLEFORD AND MEDAL ROUND (By “Long Drive.”) In a recent medal round played by the members of the. Riverside Golf Club many good cards were handed in. Although J. Thorton was handicapped with a strained back he handed in a good card of 69 net. Included in his score were 5 "birdies.” J. Connell has been getting in plenty of practice of late and returned a card of 68 net. A carefree golfer, J. B. Carruthers is still continuing on his winning way. He defeated G. Beecroft in the semifinal of the intermediate championship. In the medal round Carruthers also returned a card of 69 net. The downfall of H. Knox in the medal round was sevens at the 13th and 14th holes. Another player who has settled down to more serious golf of late is C. Leigh. He returned his best card to date, one of 67 net. In the final of the “Bobbin” competition J. Bell defeated D. Costello 1 Up on the eighteenth. In a stableford round played last weekend R. E. Baker headed the list with 36 points. Playing in the Stableford round F. Candy had a clay off and only scored 28 Stableford points. It was fully proved on Sunday that when the strain is on Candy can play good golf. In the semi-final of the senior championship he defeated J. Thornton. W. Gemmell has proved a most consistent player of late and has been playing to his handicap regulahly. In the Stableford cotiipetitioh he Scored 33 points. Another player who scores well in Stableford rounds is B. Summers. He scored 35 points and had “birdie” 3’s at the 9th, 16th and 18th holes.
Playing in the top half of the junior championship M. Finlayson played and defeated M. Manson. Finlayson now plays H. Orrell in the final over 36 holes.
It has been decided by the Committee that the finals of the men’s championship events have to be played on or before October 8.
During the weekend the Mahunga Club has challenged the Riverside Club (holders) for the Domihion Life Cup. This match is creatihg much interest and the holders are confident of defending this challenge.
