CARTERTON

GOVERNMENT HOUSES WORK PROGRESSING. ("Times-Age” Special.) Work on the Government cottages at .South Carterton is proceeding apace. The framework of one building has been completed and that of another well on the way. When finished these houses will be a decided acquisition to the borough. RED CROSS SOCIETY CARTERTON BRANCH FORMED. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over a very large attendance in the Dalefield Dairy Company’s building last evening. The Mayor outlined the purpose of the meeting and introduced Captain Galloway, M.C., of Wellington, and called upon him to address those present on Red Cross work. This he did in a very able manner, after which it was unanimously decided to form a branch of the Red Cross Society in Carterton. Office-bearers were appointed as follows: —President, Mr D. L. Taverner; vice-presidents, Dr. R. N. Campbell, Mesdames P. A. Cole and Every, Miss O. Wolters; treasurer, Mr C. C. Callender; secretary, Miss C. Berrill; executive committee, Mesdames A. W. Beale, G. Chennells, R. N. Campbell, E. T. Beaven, L. Fairbrother, H. Knutson, W. C. M. Sorensen, A. F. Stubbs, N. Peacock and J. Udy. Seventy-two members were enrolled. Captain Galloway was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for his interesting address. PIPE BAND COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES SUSPENDED. A meeting of the ladies’ committee which has been for some time past working assiduously for the benefit of the Wairarapa Pipe Band in getting sufficient funds together for the purchase of uniforms for members, met at the residence of Mrs R. Hall. .Mrs W. Hall presided. After consideration it was resolved to go into recess during the war period. It was unanimously decided that members give their wholehearted support toward matters connected with the Red Cross Society. After the meeting Mrs Half provided afternoon tea which was much appreciated and for which she received a vote of thanks. BABY CARNIVAL DANCE AT CLAREVILLE. There was a large attendance at the Clareville Hall last evening when a dance was held in aid of the candidature of John Corbet in the Women’s Division Baby Carnival. As a result the funds to assist the Belvedere-Tara-tahi baby has been materially swelled. The function was sponsored by the ' Clareville members of the Young Farmers’ Club, who were accorded a vote of thanks. Thfe Monte Carlo was won by Miss Thompson and Mr G. Wadham. An amusing incident occurred when a .chain waltz was included in the programme of dances and every person caught dancing with baby Corbet’s mother was fined the value of a vote in the carnival. This alone was the means of providing a considerable number of votes. Music tvas provided free by Mr J. Edwards. The M.C. was Mr S. Fisher.. Fire Protection. , All the fire holes in High Street are ' being overhauled by borough workmen and when completed will be a - great assistance to the fire brigade in dealing with an outbreak of fire. * Church Services. Church of England service will be conducted at Waihakeke on Sunday next at 2 p.m. The Vicar of the Parish, the Rev W. F. Stent will officiate. , Mr Colin Sherriff, of Wellington, will visit Carterton at the weekend. Mr Sherriff will preach at the Presbyterian Church at* both services and at West Taratahi in the afternoon. Bank Holiday. , Monday being Dominion Day the banks in Carterton will observe a holi - c day. f Properties Sold. ' During the past week two resident- ?. ial properties. one in north High 1 Street. and the other in Garrison , Street, have changed ownership, both at good figures. v Snow Disappears. h The warm rain yesterday was the t. means of removing the snow from the v Tarawa ranges in the vicinity of Car- .V terton. The Works Committee will F meet on Monday afternoon and the I Gas Committee on Monday evening.
