BOOKMAKING CHARGE LOCAL RESIDENT FINED £25. (“Times-Age” Special.) i Arrested on a charge of having used the premises of the Star Restaurant, Martinborough, as a common gaminghouse, the proprietor, Paul Michael, appeared in the Magistrates’ Court, Martinborough, yesterday, before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M. He pleaded guilty and was fined £25 and 15s costs. Detective-Sergeant W. Kane, Masterton, who conducted the case for the police, stated that on the afternoon of Saturday, September 16, in the company of Constable C. Rearden, Masterton, he .visited the Star Restaurant where the proprietor, Michael, was informed of the nature of their visit. Michael did not cause the police any trouble. CARNIVAL CONTEST POSITION OF CANDIDATES. The following is the position of the candidates in the queen carnival: — Green Queen 4,124 votes. Gold Queen 2,933 votes. SWIMMING BATHS SCHOOL GALA DAY. The prize winners at the school gala day in aid of the swimming baths were:—Treasure trove, Mrs Carruthers; basket, Ronald Ross; croquet, Mrs Simpson and Gordon Hardie; bed jacket, Miss Ronald; cheese, Mr Wright. Golf Championship. Members playing in the junior and C grade championships are requested to play their matches as soon as possible. The following is the ladies’ Miss Jury v Miss Hancox; Mrs Connell v Mrs Baker; Mrs Moore v Mrs Knutson; Mrs Marflitt v Miss Harvey; Miss Blundell v Miss Stewart; Miss Mahood v Miss K. Martin; Mrs Knell v Mrs McLeod; Mrs Parsons v Mrs Wall. Players must be off the Ist tee by 1 p.m.
