Details of increased taxation for unemployment relief and social services were announced by the Treasurer (Mr Richardson) in the Legislative Assembly. The new rates operate from October 1 and will bring the total taxation of this financial year for unemployment relief to £8,4-12,000. The amounts payable will be substantially increased for every class of wageearner. Single persons formerly exempt on wages not exceeding £3 a week must now pay tax if they earn £2 or more. In addition to increases in wages tax, the Government proposes increases in the income tax. company tax and probate tax.
