New Picture Theatre. A new picture theatre is to be erected in Pahiatua, and the building is expected to be completed before Christmas. < Bible Society. The annual meeting of the Masterton branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society will be held on Monday, September 25, at 2.30 p.m., in the Methodist Sunday School. The speaker will be the Rev D. Calder, 8.A.. Dominion Secretary. All interested are cordially invited to attend. Dogs That Bite. It was pointed out to a “Times-Age” representative today that it is not generally known that it is an offence under the bylaws for a person to own a dog which is in the habit of biting people. Such person is liable to prosecution, the owner fined and the dog destroyed at the discretion of the magistrate. Havelock North Tragedy.
The affair was most tragic, as. though deceased had financial difficulties, they were not very great, said the district coroner, Mr G. Ebbett, at an inquest in Hastings yesterday into the death of Graeme Leofric Home-Douglas, aged 31. whose body was found at his residence. Havelock North, yesterday. He returned a verdict of suicide by monoxide poisoning while in a state of mental depression. Enlisted at Age of 77.
With more than 50 years of military service behind him. Colonel G. J. Smith, Opawa. has enlisted for service with the special force. Sharing with the Hon Sir R. Heaton Rhodes the honour of holding of holding the senior colonelship of the Canterbury regiment, Colonel Smith is 77 years of age. He said that he had enlisted to encourage young men also to offer their services. Day of Prayer.
The President of * the Methodist Church, the Rev Angus Mcßean. has telegraphed Archbishop Averill his cordial endorsement of the Archbishop’s proposal that all churches observe October 1 as a national day of prayer. He is inviting the Methodist Church to fall into line with the proposal. The Very Rev W. H. Howes. Acting Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, has made a call to all ministers and congregations of the Church to observe, in common with other Christian communities, a day of national prayer on Sunday, October 1.
