BURDEN OF ABYSSINIAN CAMPAIGN. “One of the most prevalent delusions is that dependency territory is invariably a source of great wealth," said Sir John Harris in a recent speech. “Those who have followed i closely during the last four years the periodic publication of official figures i are appalled at the colossal burden | which the Italian taxpayer will have ' to bear over the Abyssinian campaign ,fo 50 years. The total figure is the ; heaviest in colonial history—namely, ! something in excess of £450,000.000. | This will appear to involve the Italian taxpayer in responsibility for a perpetual charge exceeding £15,000,000 a year. It is roughly true to say that nations are fortunate if they obtain from dependency enterprises an average of 5 per cent on the capital invested”
