EIFFEL MASTERPIECE

THE BRIDGE OF GARABIT. After commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Eiffel Tower, France has just celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of another of Gustave Eiffel’s masterpieces, the bridge of Garabit. Such an innovation was this bridge that when it was ooened it was three years before the authorities would nermit a train to run on it, although it had been built with that intention. The bridge of Garabit is 8 miles from Si Flour, in the Cantal. It is an iron j structure of a total length of 437 yards, ; and it is 410 feet above the river. j Ono of the speakers at the celebra ■ j lion said: “In spite of its age, the j bridge is so light and elegant in construction that it is quite modern. To-1 day, notwithstanding the progress of-1 fifty years in technique there is little that would be changed by a modern engineer. It has grown old neither in | its style nor its type.” I
