LEAGUE OF MOTHERS
J MONTHLY MEETING. 1 ' POLAND AND ITS PROBLEMS. • At the monthly meeting of the League of Mothers Mrs L. B. Maunsell pre- • sided over a record attendance of ’ members and friends. ; The speaker was Mrs M. Cleghorn, 1 8.A., who took as her subject Poland and its many problems. > “Centuries ago when Poland was a ; Kingdom it was a short lived thing to '■ be a Polish king..” said Mrs Cleghorn ’ in her opening remarks. The kings did 1 not inherit their power, but were ’ chosen by the people and as conveni- ! ently disposed of. The Poles had always suffered great persecution from the Russians, and most Polish families could tell tales of banishment to the . mines of Russia. Germany, Austria, and Russia had all taken their toll of Poland and left the country in a state :of complete desolation. During the comparatively few years since Poland had become a republic, her powers of recuperation had been little short of marvellous. They had engaged the services of specialists in every sphere of medicine, science and education —restored order to their country. Mrs Cleghorn felt sure that Poland would rise again when her present struggles were over. Many incidents experienced during her travels amongst the hospitable and friendly Polish people were related, and at the conclusion Mrs Cleghorn was accorded a vote of thanks for her interesting and informative address. From a retiring collection the sum of £3 was added to a fund in aid of Polish refugees. The tea hostesses were Mesdames E) J. Burke, J. McGregor, J. Renner, E. A. Heyller. and Miss M. Robieson.
