STATE THEATRE
“ELEPHANTS NEVER FORGET.” With a cast studded with stars and a story filled with action and humour, Hal Roach’s “Elephants Never Forget,” a merry comedy romance, will be screened tonight at the State Theatre. Among the notable players who take part in the carefree doings of “Elephants Never Forget” are Oliver Hardy, Jean Parker, June Lang, Billie Burke, Alice Brady, James Ellison and Harry Langdon. The story relates the unexpected turn of events in the Tibbitt family when Dr. Tibbitt, played by Oliver Hardy, administers first-aid to a sentimental elephant. Zenobia. The elephant is grateful to her benefactor, in fact so grateful she causes the collapse of his social stand- 1 ing. More than that, her unbecoming behaviour causes a court scandal. Billie Burke and Alice Brady are cast as society women who do not see eye to eye. Jean Parker, James Ellison and June Lang comprise the romantic triangle and turn in capital performances. Harry Langdon, as the impresario of a medicine show, indulges in some side-splitting comics, and Hardy, as the medico who causes all the fuss, turns in his most impressive portrayal to date. Others who add to the general gaiety and suspense of the story are Stepin Fetchit and Philip Hurlic. The story moves along, dropping laughs and comic situations and working up to a brilliantly, conceived climax. Lavish sets, authentically executed, and unusually fine lighting effects add their importance to the excellence of “Elephants Never Forget” as one of the screen’s new comedy hits. Among other distinguished highlights of the new production are a fine musical score, beautiful costumes and topnotch camera work.
