FLYING PAPA
MEN' INJURED, IN. MAKURI GORGE. CAUGHT BY DELAYED EXPLOSION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PAHIATUA. This Day. - Four men were injured by flying fragments of papa when a delayed charge exploded in the Makuri Gorge yesterday morning. G. Ancell; works foreman, sustained cracked ribs and a cut on the head; C. Dinnan, bruises and abrasions on the face and head; T. Chamberlain, bruises on the throat; B. Lee, bruises on a leg. All four received medical attention and Messrs Lee and Dinnan were admitted to the Pahiatua Hospital. The others were taken home. The condition of all is reported this morning to be satisfactory. Mr Ancell received the worst effects of' the explosion. He was struck on the chest by a lump, of papa and thrown off the road nine feet down a bank. A charge had failed to explode and; after waiting for an hour, the men were about to investigate. Mr Ancell had just arrived, on the scene when the charge exploded sixteen feet away. The trouble is believed to have been due to a faulty fuse.
