Mr J. B. Carruthers, of Masterton, is on a visit to Palmerston North. Messrs G. Mclvor (Petone) and J. H. Townsley (Wellington) are staying at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton. Mr R. W. McCreath, Gore, president of the New Zealand Croquet Council and manager of the New Zealand croquet team which has just completed a visit to Queensland, returned to New Zealand yesterday. Mr Philip A. Smithells, the newly appointed superintendent of physical education, and formerly director of his department at University College, Exeter, has arrived in New Zealand to take up his duties with the Department of Education in Wellington. Guests staying at the Hotel Midland. Masterton, include Messrs H. Lloyd, P. Sims, J. Meyer, J. Shanahan, H. Robinson, E. Jantkey, H. Fitzgerald, E. Ireland, W. Strang, T. Quinn, B. Gordon, H. Shadgett, J. Gunn, W. Percivall (Wellington); W. Blincoe. E. Parnell, W. Mason. E. Harper. R. Metcalfe, J. Rennock (Palmerston North); D. Westwood, B. Jenkins (Nelson); J. Barnett, B. Hollier (Hastings); C. Davis (Wanganui) J. Russell (Napier) and C. Morgan (Gisborne). On the eve of his transfer on promotion to Wellington, Mr J. AV. Stitt, Post and Telegraph Overseer at Masterton, was accorded' yesterday a farewell by his local fellow-officers and associates at Eketahuna, Carterton and Featherston. In the absence of the Postmaster, Mr W. H. King, Supervisor,, Clerical Branch, presented Mr Stitt with a handsome travelling .rug and expressed the goodwill and best wishes of his colleagues in Masterton and district. Mr Stitt suitably responded. The M.P. for Wanganui, Mr Cotterill, is among those enlisted in the New Zealand forces for service at home or overseas. Among those passed for service are Messrs C. N. Armstrong, Wanganui city councillor, and F. R. Chittey, district manager of the State Advances Corporation. Wanganui. With the acceptance of Mr Armstrong the Citizens’ League majority on the city council disappears. Labour and Citizens are now of equal strength, each having six members, with the Labour mayor. Mr W. J. Rogers, having the balance of the power through the casting vote.
