APPEAL BY GANDHI
CONDITIONS OF INDIAN CO-OPERATION DEFENCE OF DEMOCRACY. CHANGE IN BRITISH OUTLOOK URGED. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Day, 9 a.m.) WARDHA, September 1... Mr Gandhi has appealed to Britain for “honest action to impleriient the declarations of faith in democracy made on the eve of the war.” He added: “The recognition of India and all those under the British Crown as free and independent nations seems to me to be the natural corollary of the British profession of democracy. If war means anything less than the cooperation of dependent countries it can never be honestly voluntary unless it is based on non-violence. Wha< is required is-a mental revolution in the minds of British statesmen. Will Britain have an unwilling India dragged into the war or a willing ally cooperating with her in the defence of democracy? The support of Congress would mean the greatest moral asset in favour of Britain and France;”
