Through the restrictions in the consumption of petrol, the main street at Ashburton was almost deserted of vehicular traffic about midday the other day, and conditions were sufficiently peaceful to attract at least one shy visitor. This was a hare which appeared on the main street near the centre of the town and took liberal time to observe “city life” in spite of interruptions by occasional passing cars. Finally it went up East Street and after taking several turns he headed for more open spaces.
