TENNIS IN U.S.A.

FOREST HILLS TOURNEY. SINGLES WON BY MISS MARBLE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) FOREST HILLS. September 17. In the women's final, Miss A. Marble defeated Miss Helen Jacobs, 6/0, 8/10, 6/4. Today’s matches were played in a high wind. It virtually wrecked Miss Marble’s game. Her overhead play was particularly wretched. Miss Jacobs was competent but her strokes lacked Miss Marble’s depth and power. RIGGS DEFEATS VAN HORN. (Received This Day, 10.35 a.m.) FOREST HILLS, September 17. In the national tennis finals. Riggs defeated Van Horn, 6/4, 6/2, 6/4. Playing cool and cautious tennis Riggs halted the meteoric progress of the nifieteen-yeai’-old Van Horn in straight sets. Tired by a gruelling five-set match on each of the two preceding days Van Horn showed occasional flashes of form by which he eliminated Sabin and Bromwich on successive days, but he was mostly wild and ineffective. There were limes when Van Horn found touch and blasted winners that left Riggs shaking his head, in despair. But they were all too infrequent. V.an Horn's first appearance in the national singles last year saw him take a set from Budge.
