THE RUSSIAN INVASION OF POLAND

OTHER STATES EXAMINING i

POSITION. ’ EVENTS ON VARIOUS FRONTS. The following Daventry reports have been rebroadcast by the New Zealand National stations: —

The situation arising out of the Russian invasion of Poland is being fully examined by the British, French and Polish Governments. A statement issued by the Polish Embassy in London said the Polish Government could not enter into any discussion on the pretext on which Russia sought to justify her troops entering Polish territory. The ultimatum To Warsaw. The German High Command reported at 6.20 o'clock last night that it was expected that Polish representatives would reach the Germans at about 10 a.m. to discuss the evacuation of Warsaw. The Germans have given an undertaking to cease all hostilities in an area embraced by one mile on each side of the road to allow refugees to leave. A Polish broadcast, after the time stipulated for the surrender had expired, urged Poles to resist the invaders and did not mention the ultimatum. It was stated in Berlin that there had not yet been a bombardment of Warsaw. Fifty-five Polish war planes have landed in Rumania and have been interned. / The Poles state that two Polish armies are still fighting and holding a big area, and that the Polish Government continues in existence. A damaged Polish submarine has arrived in Swedish territorial waters, and has been interned. WESTERN FIGHTING. I The latest French communique states that there is nothing important to report. Aerial activity had been reduced owing to the atmospheric conditions. It is stated that fighting on the Western front so far has been only of an exploratory nature, and' that major operations have not yet begun. French aircraft have been actively bombing the German positions and communications. Results of the shelling of the Siegfried Line are said to be very satisfactory. Photographs taken before and after the shelling confirm reports that the fortifications have been built of inferior concrete.

The Soviet has handed a note to Rumania stating that Russia intends to respect Rumanian territorial integrity.

Further mobilisation measures have been taken in Belgium.
