CARNAGE IN VILNA
CAUSED BY GERMAN BOMBING

Vilna radio reports that 18 German, planes 200 bombs, causing shocking carnage in the centre of the city. The deathroll is immense and consists mainly of women and children.
Polish dispatches say that German planes continue to attack defenceless refugee trains and Red Cross columns, swooping low and massacring civilians with bombs and machine-guns. The Krzemieniec correspondent of the “New York Times” says German bombers are ravaging the country murdering women and children. Open towns have suffered the most atrocious senseless and wanton bombing. Hundreds of civilians were killed when an evacuation; train, in which journalists and foreign officers reached Czeremsza, was. halted by severe bombing. Eye-witnesses describe German planes as chasing peasant women working in the fields. The machine-gunning of private motor-cars has become the favourite pastime of Nazi pilots.
