STATE THEATRE

SHERLOCK HOLMES ON THE SCREEN. Devotees of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective character, Sherlock Holmes, will be more than agreeably surprised both with Basil Rathbone’s characterisation of Holmes and with the pictorial presentation of the story, “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” now showing at the State Theatre . Even the most fastidious stickler for detail in a screen representation of a classic story, could not cavil at this production. It has been produced faithfully even to the eeriness of Dartmoor, and to the idiosyncrasies of Conan Doyle’s noted character. Basil Rathbone makes a marvellous Holmes, while Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson is an excellent foil to his brilliant friend. For those few who may not have read this story we can commend it as possessing thrills, chills, mystery and suspense. It is more than an ordinary detective story. It is a classic come, to life on the screen. To those who Snow “The House of the Baskervilles” ever so well in print, we still commend it. For 20th Century-Fox have made a wonderful picture from this wonderful mystery story. It has atmosphere combined with character and every player is well-suited to the part chosen. Wendy Barrie makes a charming heroine to Richard Greene as hero and the others of the case do equally as well. The supporting programme is good, marked by a charming travelogue of the River Thames, two good newsreels, a fishing short, and an amusing cartoon. The programme will be tonight and Monday. ” The supports include the New Zealand badminton players in action in Australia;
