SPORT OF KINGS OVERSEAS
PERSONAL AND OTHERWISE. Foalings reported from Australia- include a filly by The Buzzer from Medmenham, the dam of Ajax, Medmenham's first foal, a filly by Backwood (imp), for whom no name has been registered, came in 1931, four years after her importation to Australia by the late E. L. and Mr C. Baillieu (she missed in 1932) and in 1933 came a colt by Brazen (imp), which raced, as Humorist. Ajax was foaled in 1934, and Medmenham missed again in 1935. The next year she had a filly by Marconigram (imp), registered as Beam, and recently purchased from the sale of the late Mr E. L. Bailleau’s horses in Melbourne by Mr A. W. Thompson for only 300gns, a very reasonable sum considering her youth and relationship to Ajax. The mare had no foal in 1937 or 1938. This season she will more than likely be mated with the Widden sire Brueghel (imp) only son in New South Wales of Pharos, whose son, Pharis 11, is considered by some authorities to be the greatest colt in Europe this year. For the second time this- season Challedon beat Johnstown. The race was the Arlington Classic run at Chicago on July 22, and worth £8.900 to the winner. Johnstown was so strongly fancied that he started at 5 to 1 on, while Challedon returned his backers 14 to 1. Both carried 9.0, and the favourite at once went to the front, and at one stage was racing three lengths clear of the other four starters. Johnstown was beaten a furlong from home in 2min 2sec, after running the' first furlong in 12 sec. two furlongs in I 23 l-ssec, three in 35sec, five in 59sec. and the mile in Imin 36sec.
