The question of what constituted a memorial was raised by Mr. A. Ferguson at a public meeting held at Devonport to decide on a Centennial undertaking for the district. The speaker said that most of the proposals were municipal matters and it was evident at that stage that there might be difficulty ip arousing public interest. Mr. Ferguson gave an emphatic denial that he would prefer a group of status ary. “We have got too many statues looking on, that is the trouble,” he said.
