“LUCKY DIP”

OPERA HOUSE NEXT WEEK. K ( When a number of incongruous ele- 1 ments —members of the “smart young j people,”, a retired brigadier-general, a , milliner, a mystery-man, a baby-linen • shopkeeper, a distraught female, and a successful novelist—meet on a social plane to which many of them are unaccustomed, there is obviously ample material for the construction of diverting situations. When two of these persons turn out to have been previously intimately associated, under circumstances rendering their meeting highly embarrassing, the opportunities. for hilarity become still more apparent. In the hands of such a playwright as Frank Vosper, this, material has, in “Lucky Dip,” been moulded into one of the most light-hearted and hilarious comedies that has appeared on the stage for many a day. It would be unfair, both to the players and to the prospective audiences, to disclose more of the plot than is suggested above. Undoubtedly the skilful handling of unexpected situations will delight large audiences at the performances at the Opera House on Tuesday and Wednesday next. Incidentally, Mastertonians will then have their first opportunity of seeing Mr G. R. Sykes in the role of a police officer, a somewhat bullying one at that. Mr Jack Mac Kay takes the part of his subordinate—it is desirable to mention this, as he will probably prove unrecognisable when made up for the part.
