CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Fields for Ashburton Meeting Under Review JOHN GRIGG STAKES PROMISE TO BE KEENLY CONTESTED HIGHLY-PROMISING MATERIAL TO TAKE PART (BY “CARBINE.”) Spring racing in the South Island will commence on 'Saturday when the Ashburton Racing Club will stage its meeting. Excellent fields have been entered in the majority of events and a good day’s racing seems assured. Main interest will probably be centred round the running of the John Griggs Stakes, Which promises to be the event of the day. Betting will be of the win-and-place system.
12.15— COUNTY HURDLES. One mile and a half and 100 yards. Court Yard 11 1 Colonel Jewish Lad 913 French 9 0 Metal Bird .. 9 10 Comus9 0 Bit o’ Blue ..9 0 Full Back ....9 0 Court Yard did nothing out of the ordinary last season but at the same time this horse will probably be liked by many. Jewish Lad‘ recorded some quite good performances last season and if in form should make the going interesting. Metal Bird with 9.10 would appear to have a fair chance, while at the weight this event is not beyond Bit o’ Blue. Colonel French, Comus andFull Back complete the field and all three runners are expected to be on hand over the final stages. In an open event the public may favour Metal Bird Bit o’ Bludl I Jewish Lad
An excellent field will face the starter in the Novice Stakes. In this race the three-year-olds carry 8.0 and the older horses 8.4. Despite his failure at Wingatui Lord Midas must be given a show in this event. Blue Coat, Scold, Lady Don and Dinah Dhu are all expected to gain support. Boloyna is expected in well informed circles to run a good race, while St Cloud’s chances of a place riiusj; be seriously considered. Another who will command respect is Muriet. Support, however, may come for ■Lord Midas St Cloud ! Boloyna 1.40— SELMA TROT HANDICAP; class 3.43. One mile and a half. Rerekohua, Jacose and Diviner performed on the same course in June. Rerekohua finished second to Garment, and Diviner, who was a place favourite, finished sixth. Imperial Jade, who is bracketed with Mackscot, looks to have a fair chance. Latest Edition, Nationalist and Happy Man are also expected to take part in the finish. Support may come, however, for Imperial Jade Diviner i Rerekohfia 2.15— ASHBURTON HANDICAP. One mile and a quarter. Studley Royal 9 .0 Gay Rebel .... 8 7 Night Dress .. 8 13 Mount Vai .. 8 5 Parquet ;8 12 The . Wrecker 8 4 Wine Card ..8 8 Silver Slipper 8 2 It \is some time since Studley Royal won a race, and it would appear as if he could do with a race or two before striking form. Night Dress has not shown wonderful form but in this event he might show up. With 8.12 up the chances of Parquet must be seriously considered. Wine Card, who has won over the distance previously, should not be without backers, while Gay Rebel might also be fancied. Mount Vai, The Wrecker and Silver Slipper complete the field and these three should keep the rest of the runners within striking distance. Supported horses may include The Wrecker Night Dress Parquet 2.55— JOHN GRIGG STAKES. For - two-year-olds. Four furlongs. Wild Fox Sunny Queen Gold Flight Tatting Doria * Whiphand Shikari Don’t Forget Noko Shikari is a smart galloper and is expected to be in the running for a place. The possilibities of Doria appear to be good and it will take a fast horse to keep with her. Wild Fox may not be quite ready. Gold Flight has created favourable impressions at work and 1 will probably be well supported. Of the others Noko and Whiphand appear the pick. Support may come for Doria Shikari Gold Flight 3.35—
Prince 7 23 Wardress is likely to prove a strong candidate and will in all probability be well supported. Great Swoop is expected to be on hand for most of the journey, but the distance may prove too far. Captain Bruce, Merry March. Waka and Plumage should all command a fair portion of support. A recent winner is Merry March, who should be liked, and Prudent Prince should soon be in winning form. Good prospects are held by Shanghai Lily and Knight Commander. Benevolent with 7.7 up might upset matters, so might King Gustavo. Public opinion may, however, favour Shanghai Lily King Gustavo Wardress 4.15— SPRING HANDICAP. Seven furlongs.
Good class has been entered in the Spring Handicap in which Sovereign Lady carries the top weight of 9.0 Then comes Dictate with 8.13 and the chances of both horses is above the average. Silver Streak and Second Innings do not impress. Winning Rival, who scored some good wins last season, will more than likely receive a fanportion of support. At the Grand National meeting Paper Note raced well and should go well. Lady Leigh, Passaforrn and Rabble should be with the leaders most of the way, while Spartan and Gay Parade might upset calculations. Favoured runners may include Winning Rival Paper Note Dictate 4.50— RAKAIA TROT HANDICAP; 3.38 class. One mile and a half. Bed Rock, Great Blaze and Black Art must npt be overlooked, while the chances of-Accountant must be considered with all respect. Axspear and Erin’s Lad are expected in certain quarters to be in the money but the public may favour Allen Wrack Great Blaze Accountant FOXTON MEETING FIELDS FOR SATURDAY. FOXTON, September 13.
