The report added the dry autumn weather had changed and rain had fallen. The roads, already ruined by the advances of German tanks and air bombings, were becoming impassable. ' The Warsaw radio also announced that nine German divisions had been diverted from Warsaw and the Vistula to western European fronts, adding that “the invaders are now definitely on the run. ’ ’ A Budapest report says the mayor of Warsaw, M. Starzynski, appealed by radio to enlist in what may become a suicide battalion to defend the city. He warned the youths not to volunteer unless they were resigned to fight to the last as “Warsaw will be defended to the last man. ’ ’ The Polish commander radioed that women were fighting’ alongside the men and were showing great courage.
